Where legislation permits or actively promotes in vitro testing methods, Harlan Laboratories develops and validates the techniques to enable our clients to contribute to the reduction of animal testing.

Established and accepted test guidelines for in vitro test systems already exist for phototoxicity, skin corrosivity and skin permeation. The growing awareness within the biomedical research community and regulatory authorities is constantly changing legislative demands and thus, in vitro alternative methods will increasingly replace standard toxicity methods.

For example REACH, the new European chemical regulation, requests to avoid animal testing and to preferentialy employ alternative methods.

Harlan laboratories is an active member of several committees established to research and validate alternative methods for animal testing.
Harlan laboratories takes a proactive aproach to the development and validation of alternatives for product safety assessment. We take part in laboratory trials on a regular basis, establish purpose-designed in vitro models and offer advice on in vitro alternatives to animal testing.

The alternative methods offered by Harlan laboratories to replace in vivo tests include but are not limited to the following:

  • The EpiDerm Model
  • Bovine corneal opacity test (BCOP)
  • Hen's egg chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM)
  • Rabbit enucleated eye test (REET)
  • Chicken enucleated eye test (CEET)
