Animal models of human disease are used widely in academic and industrial laboratory programs. A major advantage for utilizing rodents in these paradigms is the ability to control most genetic contributions across generations. In addition, the genetic diversity across strains provides critical information on the genetic components of disease onset and progression. To this end, the genetic characterization of most commonly used mouse and rat strains is of paramount importance in any study. A carefully monitored colony helps provide insight into the biology and genetic basis of disease.

The Harlan GenScreen™ program provides genetic testing services using both microsatellite and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) panels for characterizing a wide variety of inbred mouse and rat strains.

Our program begins with a one-on-one consultation with a Harlan geneticist to identify the appropriate technology, breeding program, and testing schedule to ensure proper colony maintenance and preservation of genetic lineage. Once your program has been defined, you provide your biopsies to Harlan GenScreen™ using your own vessels or a preregistered plate that will be provided to you. Harlan GenCheck™ Rapid DNA Isolation is performed in an automated fashion utilizing state of the art robotics and nucleic acid extraction chemistries.
