Along with the possibility to order surgically modified animals,
Harlan Laboratories is now offering customers two surgical training
courses. These courses will cover both theoretical information and
practical hands-on surgery, and post-surgery handling &
maintenance of the animals.
You will learn about microsurgical instruments and suture
techniques. After a demonstration, you will learn how to tie
knots that hold, and how to approach the structure of interest in
your experimental model. On the second day you will do a
catheterization of the jugular and/or the femoral vein. It is of
utmost importance to take special care of catheterized animals in
order to prolong catheter patency. Flushing of the catheter,
proper sampling of blood and locking of the catheter after use will
be discussed and practiced.
Furthermore we will give you information on practical things
such as transport, housing and special care of surgically prepared
animal models.
The second course builds on the first one and continues with
basic information on anesthesia and peri-operative care of small
laboratory rodents. The practical part will focus on more advanced
techniques such as the catheterization of the portal vein, the
carotid artery and the bile duct.
Both courses are organized in the Netherlands. For a detailed
