Overview

Harlan Laboratories can currently perform polyclonal antibody production and custom polyclonal production in a variety of different species including: mouse, rat, guinea pig, rabbit, sheep, goat, pig, camalid, bovine, dog, primate, chicken and birds. If you require production in any animals not listed, pleased contact us. The use of chickens to produce polyclonal antibodies has increased in popularity as there are many advantages over traditional antibodies from mammals.

  • Chickens produce large amounts of antibody (IgY) in their eggs.
  • Chickens can be used to produce antibodies against highly conserved mammalian antigens which do not elicit a response in mammals.
  • The IgY produced does not bind to the mammalian Fc receptor; which means very low background signals.
  • Chicken antibodies do not react with Rheumatoid Factors in mammalian serum which can cause false positives when analyzing auto-immune disease serum.
  • IgY does not activate the mammalian complement pathway.

As with all our other polyclonals, Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) chickens are used to ensure production of high quality antibodies without interference or cross-reactivity due to the presence of antibodies to common poultry pathogens.
