European Biological Products and Services Summary Brochure

Overview

  • The technique used to process the sera ensures high complement activity and is in line with the recommendations of the European Health Committee. The complement is screened by a standard haemolytic titration assay against the British Reference Reagent. Endogenous non-specific cytotoxicity in the absence of antibody has been quantified. Because of the variation in complement fixation tests and assays, Harlan can supply a free of charge sample for testing against reserved batches. Complement can be collected from Guinea pigs, Rabbits and baby rabbits and is available frozen or lyophilised. Complement products include antibody complement and serum complement.

Guinea Pig Complement

  • Harlan Laboratories' Guinea Pig complement is collected from pooled sera of healthy animals that have been raised under closely defined conditions, therefore minimizing lot-to-lot variation.

 Rabbit Complement

  • All rabbit complement is collected from healthy rabbits and the technique used to process the sera ensures high complement activity. The complement is tested by appropriate assays to ensure high activity and low cytotoxicity.

 Baby Rabbit Complement

  • Normal rabbit serum is collected and pooled from young rabbits 21-28 days old. The complement is prepared in line with standard lymphocytotoxicity techniques.

Rabbit Complement for use with Mouse Lymphocytes

  • Rabbit serum is normally cytotoxic to mouse lymphocytes, particularly thymocytes. The cytotoxicity in this complement has been significantly reduced by absorption with mouse tissues and agarose.
