Natural ingredient diets are comprised of agricultural
commodities including (but not limited to): corn, corn gluten meal,
wheat, wheat middlings, soybean meal, oats, alfalfa meal, and
animal-derived ingredients such as fish meal and meat and bone
meal. Vitamins, minerals, and fat (vegetable oil or animal
fat) are added to complete the diet. Natural ingredient diets
support reproduction, growth, and maintenance of laboratory
animals.
Harlan Laboratories manufactures two lines of natural
ingredient diets - Global and Traditional. Both diet lines are
produced using fixed formulas, rigorous ingredient sourcing and
screening, and tightly controlled manufacturing processes.
Teklad Global Diets®are an integrated range of
natural ingredient diets for specific life stages.
This unique program provides nutritional consistency to
facilitate global research collaboration and
standardization.
The
Global Rodent Diets are modern formulas designed to reduce
research variables. Specifically, these diets
contain more appropriate nutrient levels, and limit or
exclude ingredients that are reported to have effects on
a wide variety of research endpoints.
The
Traditional Rodent Diets were formulated decades ago based on
understanding of rodent nutrition, ingredients, and diet
manufacturing at the time. While Traditional Diets
will supply the known nutrient needs of laboratory animals, we
recommend that researchers consider the use of a diet from our
Global Diet line.
Terminology used to describe laboratory animal diets is not
consistent across the industry. In this context, the phrase
"natural ingredient" is used to denote the relative lack of
processing the ingredients have been subjected to. Natural
ingredient diets might also be referred to as "standard" or
"grain-based" or "chow", terms that may convey some information
about the nature of the diet or how it is used, but can also lead
to confusion. Please contact our nutrition
staff with any questions you might have about laboratory animal
diets.
