HIV-1 Transgenic Rat Key Advantages

  • Sera contains gp120, which is in direct contrast to transgenic mice with the same proviral transgene
  • Viral genes are efficiently expressed in lymph nodes, spleen, thymus and blood, suggesting rat cyclin T is functional with Tat; mouse cyclin T is not functional with Tat and is only expressed in skin and muscle
  • Neurological abnormalities are similar to infected humans
