Derived at Biological Research Laboratories Limited (BRL), formerly RCC, now Harlan Laboratories Ltd., Füllinsdorf, Switzerland, from original colony at Zentralinstitute für Versuchstierzucht, Hannover, in 1989. Transferred to Harlan Sprague-Dawley, Inc., now Harlan Laboratories, in 1993 (nomenclature HsdHan:WIST). In 2004, Harlan acquired RCC Ltd. and new breeding stock was transferred in 2008 (nomenclature RccHan:WIST). As a result of this, Harlan will replace all HsdHan:WIST colonies with RccHan:WIST stock, in accordance with the Harlan Global Models Breeding System procedures, and the HsdHan:WIST subline designation will be discontinued. Unlike competitive models, the RccHan:WIST rat has been maintained from the original nucleus of 156 breeding pairs in Hannover, Germany.
