Rat Cannulations & Options

Harlan Laboratories offers several procedures to access cannulated vessels for injection or sample withdrawal in the rat model. While each method of catheter access and closure offers unique advantages, our standard cannulation closure is the subcutaneous pouch with fixed exteriorization.  For a description of additional options in vascular cannulated rats, please click here.

Mutiple surgical procedures, including cannulations, can be performed on a single animal.

Catheter patency is verified by our surgical staff post operatively and at the time of shipment. All catheters are guaranteed patent at the time of shipment.  The client should confirm patency of the rounded tip catheter, our standard tip configuration for jugular vein, femoral vein, portal vein, femoral artery and carotid artery cannulations, 3-5 days following arrival of the animals.  Routine flushing regimens should be completed every 5-7 days thereafter.  The client should confirm patency of the blunt tip catheter (standard for all non-vascular catheterizatoins) upon arrival and perform a routine flushing regimen every 3-4 days thereafter.  If nonfunctional catheters are identified during the initial patency check, clients must notify Customer Service or Technical Service as soon as possible.  Recommended flushing regimens for all catheterizations are detailed on the post operative care sheet accompanying each surgically modified animal order.  Additional information and care instructions regarding our surgically modified models are available on the surgery support web page.
