Nomenclature: Hsd:HIV-1 (F344)
HIV-1 Transgenic Rat
Origin
- The HIV-1 rat was developed at the University of Maryland
Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) from F344/NHsd stock.
HIV-1 Transgenic Rat
Characteristics
- Coat: Albino
- Carries seven of the nine HIV genes
- Noninfectious due to the functional deletion of Gag
and Pol within the HIV-1 provirus
- Develops immunologic dysfunction and AIDS-associated conditions
by five to nine months of age
- Develops moderate/severe skin lesions with age
- Clinical signs of wasting syndrome
- Early onset of cataracts
- HIV-1 associated renal disease
- Mild to moderate interstitial fibrosis
- Control models: HIV-1 littermates lacking phenotypic
characteristics, F344/NHsd rats
- Sera contains gp120, which is in direct contrast to transgenic
mice with the same proviral transgene
- Viral genes are efficiently expressed in lymph nodes, spleen,
thymus and blood, suggesting rat cyclin T is functional with Tat;
mouse cyclin T is not functional with Tat and is only expressed in
skin and muscle
- Neurological abnormalities are similar to infected humans
