 Zucker Mutant Rat Origin

  • HsdHlr:ZUCKER-Leprfa:This Zucker rat was derived from a colony obtained in 1992 from Hoffmann-La Roche, Nutley, New Jersey.

  • HsdOla:ZUCKER-Leprfa: In 1980, this Zucker rat came from Wellcome Laboratories, Dartford to Olac (now Harlan UK).

Zucker Mutant Rat Characteristics

  • Coat:  Black, brown, brown/white, black/white
  • fa is an autosomal recessive mutation on chromosome 5
  • Leprfa/Lepr+heterozygotes do not show partial expression of fa phenotype
  • Animals have not been selectively bred to induce hyperglycemia
  • Exhibit obesity at 4 to 5 weeks of age
  • Insulin-resistant
  • Hyperphagia
  • Muscle atrophy
  • Hyperlipemic
  • Adipocyte hypertrophy and hyperplasia
  • Hypercholesterolemia
  • Hyperinsulinemia
